How to read these results
- Violations are recorded by EPA or your state when a system breaks a drinking water rule. “Health-based” covers exceeding a limit or skipping required treatment.
- Lead 90th percentile means 90% of tap samples were at or below this value. Above the action level (15 ppb, dropping to 10 ppb on Nov 1, 2027), the system must take steps. It isn't a violation by itself.
- PFAS results come from EPA's UCMR 5 monitoring. A detection, or one sample above 4 ppt for PFOA or PFOS, isn't a violation, because limits apply to running annual averages from 2029. EPA proposed changes in May 2026 (a 2031 option for PFOA/PFOS and removing four other limits) that were not final as of 2026-10-21.
- Hardness is shown with a confidence label. “Measured” values come from the utility's own report. “Estimate” values are county medians of untreated stream and well samples, not your tap water, and are hidden where the utility is known to soften its water. Michigan county estimates are older, so treat them with extra caution. County estimates come from Hard Water Map, licensed CC BY 4.0.
- Systems are matched to ZIP codes using EPA's UCMR 5 ZIP list (larger systems), and to counties using SDWIS service-area records. Your home may be served by a different system, so check your water bill.
